Tart orange-zest notes lead this clean, pleasantly vegetal zin. It's dense but there's brightness and clarity to the fruit. Some spirity warmth in the end makes the fruit taste liqueur-ish.

Mother Clone Zinfandel
-
2023
-
91 Points | Wine.com, Wilfred Wong
The 2023 Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel carries on a legacy that began with the family’s first vineyard plantings in the 1920s. Deep ruby in color, it opens with expressive aromas of bramble berries and red licorice. On the palate, it is both smooth and firmly structured, delivering juicy layers of dark fruit framed by supple tannins. A touch of oak aging adds subtle spice and depth, enhancing its classic Dry Creek Valley character. This flagship Zinfandel pairs beautifully with Sonoma-style grilled beef short ribs, marinated in red wine, garlic, and fresh herbs before being slow-grilled over oak. The wine’s ripe berry notes and gentle spice complement the smoky richness and savory flavors of the dish, creating a quintessential Sonoma pairing.

Dry Creek Valley is among the top locales for Zinfandel, and I think it certainly is an area that allows for optimal ripeness levels while at the same time maintaining the fresh acidity that makes Zin so great at the table. You’ll notice a high alcohol number on the label, but you won’t notice it at all in the glass. Pepper remains intact (it often falls out of the mix at this degree of ripeness) and it makes the brambly fruit character pop. American oak is present in an enhancing manner, adding an elegant rusticity to the wine. Delicious! Contains 9% Petite Sirah.

A good choice for fans of high-powered, densely textured reds. Pushes the limits of ripeness and heavy body while balancing them with well-saturated, mouth-filling tannins that bring a sense of balance and fullness. Notes of cinnamon, vanilla bean and cloves from oak aging add nice complexity. Drink now or hold.

I tasted this wine a few months back, and know it to be a bottling of thirteen-year-old clone 337 Cabernet on the family’s Home Ranch Vineyard. It’s a celebration of a site hitting its stride, and its bright acid profile carries rich blackberry and cherry fruit with accents of dark chocolate. It’s delicious now and will age well over the next 5-10 years. Pedroncelli hasn’t been resting on their laurels for the past 97 years, and this bottle shows that continued reformation is a key to success in business as well as in the bottle. Rich Cook

The 2023 Pedroncelli Brother's Mark Cabernet Sauvignon is a deep ruby expression of Dry Creek Valley. Aged in a mix of French and American oak, it opens with evocative aromas of rustic spice and ripe blackberries. On the palate, it is generous and mouth-coating, delivering layers of dark berry fruit framed by polished tannins. Subtle oak notes of toast and cedar add depth and structure without overshadowing the fruit. This bold yet balanced Cabernet is an ideal companion for a Sonoma-style grilled ribeye topped with Cabernet butter, where the wine’s richness and spice harmonize beautifully with the savory, charred beef and the lush, wine-infused butter.

This bottling, known as “Three Vineyards” previously, now pays tribute to the second generation brothers that built the legacy that is now moving into the fourth generation. It is a fine value, and it shouts its Dry Creek Valley origins with what Julie Pedroncelli calls a “greenier” signature. That herb note tempers the ripe cool climate fruit nicely. It’s ready for a meaty meal, whether it is chicken or beef. Contains 7% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.

This wine is part of the family’s “core four” products that recently got a package refresh that tells the story of one of California’s oldest family owned wineries, approaching their 100th anniversary in Dry Creek Valley. Combining estate fruit with a little from neighboring Mauritson Vineyard, it is a tasty fresh expression with tropical fruit, fresh citrus, green apple and a nice level of grassy character. I’m sure this will be flying off the shelf, so grab it if you see it.

This bottling is a tribute to the field blend style traditionally done on the property, and though the ferments are done separately today, the spirit is definitely captured. It’s easy and approachable, showing cherry, soft dried herbs, and mild oak influence. It’s made with food in mind, and it’s a super value. Merlot has long been favored for blending in the Golden State. But it’s not just a part of the blend in Pedroncelli’s Sonoma Classico bottling; it’s the star, and comprises nearly two-thirds of the 2021 vintage, alongside Syrah, Sangiovese and Zinfandel. This combination results in a wine with polished tannins and snappy red currant, cedar and anise flavors.
