Vineyard Sources
The Syrah with Altitude The Pedroncelli Ridge Ranch property is set high above the steep hillsides overlooking Alexander Valley. The ranch was purchased by Christine Pedroncelli's father in 1962. His granddaughter and family live on the land and currently farm this premium 2 acre vineyard. The vineyard was planted in 2003 by John Pedroncelli's son-in-law, Brett Davison and the 2007 vintage is the first of many vintages from the exclusive Ridge Ranch property. From the vineyard's 1800 foot elevation, it enjoys cooler days and warmer nights than the grapes on the valley floor and lower hillsides. This ensures a more even ripening process which reflects in the richness of the limited fruit harvested from this estate.
Winemaking
We harvested at the end of September and the fruit had intense color matched with excellent sugar and acid levels. The ripeness of this particular harvest really allowed the concentrated Syrah fruit to come through matched with smooth tannins. The grapes were transferred to a temperature controlled stainless steel tank following fermentation. The wine was then racked and transferred to barrels. Aging for 20 months took place in 30% new French and seasoned American oak barrels.
Winemaker's Tasting Notes
Deep purple-red in the glass. Rich aromas of ripe berry and black pepper spice frame the wine. Concentrated flavors of blackberry, plum and licorice highlight this Syrah with well balanced tannins providing structure. Expect this wine to take on complexities for the next 5-7 years. Cellar or enjoy upon release.
