...Sangiovese Dry Creek Valley Alto Vineyards 2004

Vineyard Sources

This vintage of the classic Italian varietal Sangiovese comes from Pedroncelli’s Alto vineyards. In the 1990s, John Pedroncelli wanted to commemorate our Italian heritage by planting the famous grape of Chianti. Our vineyards thrive on three hilltops along our home vineyard on the northeastern corner of Dry Creek Valley. The fruit from the three sites are blended together at the time of harvest.

Winemaking

We pick the fruit at optimum ripeness—it is one of the first red varietals to be harvested each season. The grapes were crushed into stainless steel fermentors and fermented for 7 days. The cap was pumped over periodically to enhance the color, flavor and intensity in the wine. The wine was aged in American oak barrels for twelve months and developed additional smoothness and complexity through this process. We age our Sangiovese in seasoned oak barrels rather than adding new oak in order to allow the delicate and subtle fruit flavors to shine through. A touch of Merlot was blended in to heighten the fruit and color profile.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

Multi-layered berry aromas with rose petal and leather in the background. The wine is sturdy and balanced, with blueberry jam, earthy mineral, and a hint of warm clove framing it. It is mediumbodied, with a relaxed mouthfeel, well-integrated tannins and a long, balanced finish. This Sangiovese will age well for 5-8 years.
