Vino in my Dino

Julie 3-31-15The name Vino in my Dino comes from my earliest memory of wine at our dining room table when I was 4 years old. I had my Flintstones tableware along with my Dino cup-my parents would pour a tiny bit of Zinfandel and then add water. I asked them why they put water in my vino-it just didn’t taste good. I have been passionate about wine ever since.

I am a third generation family member/owner of Pedroncelli Winery and the office I inhabit is my childhood bedroom. I have the good fortune to look out on the same vineyard view as I have for some five decades. And I never tire of what I see. My husband Ed calls this Pedroncelli World Headquarters. I call it home. Growing up at the winery gave me life experiences I still appreciate. Agriculture, sales, marketing, weather, climate, land purchases, sunsets (a family favorite) and Sunday dinners.

I hope you’ll stop by often and appreciate my view of the wine world and together we’ll sip some Vino in my Dino.

Capturing the King

Though Zinfandel is our flagship wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, AKA ‘the king of red wine grapes’, is equally as important to us. We farm 105 acres of grapes: 33 of them are Zinfandel and 29 are Cabernet Sauvignon. Between the two they make up 40% of our total production. As the harvest season continues we’ll look at our Cabernet Sauvignons: Wisdom, Three Vineyards and Block 007.

Fermenting an Icon

Ten days ago the vineyard crew began picking Zinfandel from the home ranch. Home to our iconic Mother Clone Zinfandel, which has been growing here since the early 1900s, the vineyard contains first, second and third generation plantings. Head pruned, hillside location, hand harvested. Like we've been doing for 89 years.

Harvesting an Icon

Our 89th harvest began two weeks ago. Today we began harvesting our Mother Clone Zinfandel vineyard on our home ranch. This is our flagship wine and this is our favorite day of harvest. The vineyard was planted in the early 1900s and replanted in the late 1970s, now a second generation vineyard with a handful of the old vineyard still producing.

First Crush: Harvest Memories

My uncle John was winemaker for nearly 60 years. His first crush, 1948, was captured in the oral history J. Pedroncelli Winery: An Ongoing Family Tradition about that first year on the job as winemaker. He had just completed his World War II service and attended Santa Rosa Junior College. He was ready for his first harvest.
