Prunes used to be a big cash crop here in Sonoma County; now grapes are. A recipe from bygone days from second generation member Margaret Pedroni.
½ cup butter or shortening
1 cup sugar
½ cup sour cream or thick sour milk
1 t soda
2 cup all purpose flour
1 t cream of tartar
2 cup cooked chopped prunes
1 t each: cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice
½ t salt (if shortening is used, add to flour mixture)
Cream butter or shortening; add sugar slowly, creaming well. Add one egg at a time, stirring well; mix soda with sour cream or sour milk and add. Sift flour, measure and sift again with cream of tartar and spices. Stir in chopped prunes. Add to first mixture. Stir well. Spread batter in two eight inch layer pans, lined with wax paper. Bake in 350 degree oven until set, about 30 -40 minutes. Place on racks and cool. Frost with cream cheese frosting.
